A quick trip down the eastern shore of Maryland & VA to the Great Dismal Swamp in VA and NC, June 7-June 11, 2009.

Jack Connor > The elegant zebra swallowtail, numerous along Jericho Ditch and Interior Ditch in Great Dismal Swamp NWR.
Jack Connor > Pokeweed was just opening and seemed the zebra's preferred flower.

Jack Connor > Pawpaw, the zebra's host plant, was numerous in many areas, especially along Canal Trail in Great Dismal Swamp St. Park, NC, where a few were in fruit.
Jack Connor > Palamedes Swallowtails were numerous (dozens) on Jericho Ditch in the Great Dismal Swamp on 6/11, only a handful elsewhere.
Jack Connor > Our only pearly-eye of the trip appeared in shaded area along Railroad Ditch, 6/9.
Jack Connor > The butterfly cooperated, allowing long study & close photos. We thought at first the 5th eyespot on FW (just visible here) meant creole pearly-eye. All other field marks suggest southern pearly-eye, however: orange antennae, FW relatively straight (not "knuckled"), eyespots not surrounded in white... how often do southern pearly-eyes have a 5th eyespot?
