Jack Connor  > Murky Bird Pix > Ash-throated Flycatcher, Forsythe NWR 11-17-07
Jesse & I found this flycatcher today in a grove of persimmon trees, thick with fruit, just inside the entrance to the refuge. Had it under observation for 15-20 minutes or so. Not foraging actively, but it spit out half a dozen seeds -- not persimmon obviously, but apparently some small fruit. Ash-throated is a southwestern species that nests from Texas to California, which has been straying to NJ in recent years in fall in small numbers -- 2-4 individuals/year, according to Pete Bacinski. Most obvious difference from great crested flycatcher is the much paler belly.

Jack Connor > The grove of persimmons. Witmer Stone noted in his Plants of Southern New Jersey, "The persimmon is one of the typical Carolinian trees which give to the low woods of western NJ their austral tone. Its distribution is identical with that of the opposum..."
