Jack Connor > Sachem skipper, the most numerous butterfly in our garden each year, appearing sometimes as early as late May. Peak counts generally in late July or August. This is a male with obvious stigmas, 7-6-02.
Jack Connor > Male sachem, photo'd by J, 7-27-05, in her garden. According to Gochfeld and Burger (and others), sachems are supposed to be "immigrants" to NJ -- migrating here & not over-wintering. We have so many so early, though: has their status changed? (Southern NJ is the northern end of the species' range.)

Jack Connor > A female sachem, photo'd by Jesse, 7-27-05, more brown/gray than the usually more yellow males -- although many uncertain males/females fall inbetween, it seems.
Jack Connor > Broadwing skipper, probably the second most numerous butterfly in our yard. Caterpillars feed on Phragmites. Adults nectar in our garden, often 20+ at a time.
